Teen Therapy: Support While Navigating Emotions & Transition

Teen Therapy

Steady and Supportive Teen Therapy

The teen years come with a lot—big emotions, shifting identities, increasing pressure, and sometimes, real mental health challenges. For many teens, it’s a time of transition that can feel overwhelming or isolating. My goal is to offer a steady, supportive place where teens can work through what they’re carrying and find their way forward.

I work with teens ages 12 and up who are struggling with everything from anxiety and low self-worth to depression, school avoidance, and self-harming behaviors. My background includes time spent in both school counseling and intensive outpatient (IOP) programs, giving me insight into both everyday school stressors and more acute mental health needs.

Teen Therapy That Meets Kids Where They Are

Every teenager is different, which is why my teen therapy approach is flexible and tailored to the individual. I blend traditional therapeutic models with creative tools to help teens open up and stay engaged. Some of the techniques I use include:

  • Art-based approaches – For teens who aren’t comfortable with direct conversation, art can be a non-threatening way to explore feelings and tell their story.
  • Play-informed therapy – Especially with younger teens, incorporating games and creative expression can build trust and allow sensitive topics to surface naturally.
  • CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) – I help teens notice how their thoughts affect their emotions and actions, and support them in shifting harmful patterns
  • DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) – Many teens benefit from DBT skills like mindfulness, managing strong emotions, and handling conflict. These tools are especially helpful for teens dealing with self-harm, impulsivity, or overwhelming emotional states.

Above all, I focus on building genuine connection. I know how important it is for teens to feel like their therapist is a real person—someone who will listen without judgment, and who can meet them with both empathy and honesty.

My Areas of Focus in Teen Therapy

Some of the teen therapy issues I most often support teens with include:

  • Anxiety and panic
  • Social anxiety and peer stress
  • Depression and sadness
  • School avoidance and disengagement
  • Self-harming behaviors and suicidal thoughts
  • Identity and teen self-esteem issues
  • Family or relationship conflicts
  • Life changes, trauma, or grief

Teens don’t always say directly what’s wrong—but when their behavior, mood, or relationships start to shift, it’s often a sign that something’s going on under the surface. That’s where therapy can help. I meet with teens in my Paoli office or through Zoom, whatever works best for them.

Creating a Space Where Teens Can Be Themselves

The most important thing I offer teens is a space where they can drop the mask and be real. Whether your teen talks a mile a minute or barely says a word, I take the time to get to know them, build trust, and help them feel safe enough to open up.

This process doesn’t always happen overnight, but it matters deeply. When teens feel understood, they’re more willing to explore what’s bothering them and try new ways of coping.
