Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a structured, skills-based therapy designed to help individuals manage intense emotions, navigate relationships, and cope with life’s challenges in a healthier way. Whether you’re struggling with anxiety, emotional dysregulation, impulsive behaviors, or relationship difficulties, DBT provides practical tools to help you regain control and feel more confident in handling life’s ups and downs.
The Four Core DBT Modules
DBT is built around four key modules, each focusing on different areas of emotional and behavioral health:
1. Mindfulness
Mindfulness is the foundation of DBT. It teaches you how to stay present in the moment, observe thoughts and emotions without judgment, and develop greater awareness of your experiences. By practicing mindfulness, you can reduce emotional reactivity, improve focus, and gain a sense of control over your thoughts and actions.
2. Distress Tolerance
Difficult situations and emotions are inevitable, but how we respond to them makes all the difference. Distress tolerance skills help you cope with intense emotions without resorting to impulsive or destructive behaviors. You’ll learn techniques such as self-soothing, radical acceptance, and distraction strategies to get through tough moments without making things worse.
3. Emotion Regulation
Strong emotions can be overwhelming, but emotion regulation skills help you understand, manage, and change emotional responses. We’ll work on recognizing patterns in your emotions, shifting negative thought cycles, and practicing strategies to reduce emotional intensity so you feel more balanced and in control.
4. Interpersonal Effectiveness
Relationships—whether with family, friends, or coworkers—can be challenging. This module focuses on assertive communication, setting boundaries, and navigating conflicts effectively. You’ll learn how to express your needs and opinions in a way that is clear, respectful, and confident while maintaining healthy relationships.
A Skills-Based Approach to Therapy
One of the key components of DBT is that it is highly skills-focused. While validation and emotional support are important parts of therapy, DBT goes further by giving you a toolbox of strategies that you can use in everyday life. During our sessions, you'll spend time reflecting on recent life events and challenges to help determine which skills would be most helpful in supporting your needs. I will provide education about appropriate DBT skills, you will have the opportunity to practice the skill in session, and we'll discuss ways to implement the skill when challenges arise outside of therapy. The goal is to support you in transferring these skills from the therapy room into daily life, so you can confidently manage emotions and difficult situations on your own.
If you’re ready to build practical skills for emotional balance, resilience, and healthier relationships, DBT can help. Contact me today to learn more about how DBT can support you in gaining the tools you need for lasting change.
In addition to learning and practicing DBT skills in individual sessions, I offer DBT Skills Groups throughout the month, which can complement current individual work or serve as a refresher to clients who have previously participated in DBT.
